Who Could It Be?
Who Could It Be? is an activity designed to give students practice with identifying and writing specific points of view, sometimes called voice.
Directions:
- Create several short pieces, based on familiar folktales, in which one character is speaking to another character.
Example:
Since you are my only stepdaughter, don't even think of going to the Prince's ball. You'll never be done with all your chores. Besides, my two beautiful daughters are going, and the Prince will surely fall in love with one of them. Stay home and work!
- Read several of these letters to your class and have the students guess who is doing the writing and to whom they are writing. In the above example, Cinderella's stepmother is writing to Cinderella.
- Divide your class into groups and have them compose letters, using the point of view or voice of a character they select.
- Share the group compositions, allowing the other groups to make guesses about the writers and the audience.
- Finally, have the students write letters on their own, editing and proofreading them to final form.
- Post the letters on a bulletin board for all to identify and enjoy.
