Tales of the Talking Toothbrush

Tales of the Talking Toothbrush is an activity that was originally designed to be a file folder activity in a writing center. Today I use it as a whole group activity more frequently.

Directions:

  1. Introduce the lesson:

When your notebook escapes and you can't seem to find it anywhere, have you ever wondered if it has a mind of its own? Sometimes objects do seem to be almost human! Study a tootbrush [have a few on hand]. Imagine its problems, feelings, and secret desires. Then do one of these activities:

    • Help me write a one week diary of my life.
    • They've just changed the flavor of my favorite toothpaste. Help me write a letter of complaint to the manufacturer.
    • I'm in love with the white REACH hanging next door. Help me write a love letter to her/him.

  2. Have your students create amusing illustrations to accompany their writing. Display some of thie stories and letters for open house or parent/teacher conferences.
