Twist-a-Word




Twist-a-Word is a card game for whole class, small group, or individual practice that encourages flexibility in thinking and using a dictionary and/or thesaurus, as well as reinforcing word definitions. The objective is to determine four different words which share the same letters but have different meanings.

On the front of the card, place the four definitions. On the back, place the four words (given in parentheses next to the definition). Prepare the following cards:

Card 1

  1. vipers (adders)
  2. totals again (readds)
  3. fears (dreads)
  4. more sorrowful (sadder)

Card 2

  1. animal's den (lair)
  2. metal track (rail)
  3. prevaricator (liar)
  4. seed covering (aril)

Card 3

  1. fail to keep (lose)
  2. part of shoe (sole)
  3. gin (sloe)
  4. lions (leos)

Card 4

  1. took an oath (swore)
  2. planter (sower)
  3. debtors (owers)
  4. more ill (worse)

Card 5

  1. quarterback (passer)
  2. scattered (sparse)
  3. weapons (spears)
  4. bowling term pl. (spares)

Card 6

  1. cheese (edam)
  2. woman (dame)
  3. honeyed drink (mead)
  4. manufactured (made)

Card 7

  1. ornament (tassel)
  2. grows rancid (stales)
  3. purloins (steals)
  4. roofing tiles (slates)

Card 8

  1. hazard (danger)
  2. a plot (garden)
  3. male goose (gander)
  4. moved with (ranged)

Card 9

  1. more pliant (softer)
  2. wooded area (forest)
  3. care for (foster)
  4. talents (fortes)

Card 10

  1. sorrow (lament)
  2. ledge (mantel)
  3. cloak (mantle)
  4. mind (mental)
