It All Adds Up

It All Adds Up is an activity designed to give students practice with portmanteaus. Portmanteaus are words that are formed from combining two words, blending them together. For instance, the word "flurry" is formed from the two words "flutter" and "hurry."

This activity can be used by an individual student, a small group, or with the entire class. Simply make a set of cards. On one side print the two words to be combined; on the other, write the portmanteau.

Here is a list to get you started:

words to be combined

binary + digit= bit
parachute + troopers= paratroopers
motor + cross country= motocross
motor + pedal= moped
chuckle + snort= chortle

There are many more possibilities. Get your students in on the act by asking them to fins aportmanteau word of their own. Share their findings with the class and add their words to your set.
