Sparkle
Sparkle is a game in which students practice spelling words. Unlike the traditional spelling bee, this game allows for multi-player participation per word. It is suitable for all grade levels and is a great way to review for weekly tests.
How to play:
- Place all the students in your class in a single file line.
- Pronounce a spelling word, making sure everyone hears the word.
- The first student in line spells the FIRST letter of the word ONLY.
- The next student pronounces the SECOND letter of the word, the third student pronounces the THIRD letter, etc...
- The student who pronounces the LAST letter of the word has an additional task. He/she must also say the word "Sparkle" while looking at the next player in line.
- The player who was SPARKLED now drops out of line, returning to his/her seat.
- Play continues in this manner until only one student is left or until the moderator calls time.
- Award small prizes such as a piece of candy, a pencil, an eraser, or even bonus points for the upcoming spelling test to the winner(s).
My fifth and sixth-graders really get into this game. They love to "Sparkle" someone, making the strangest faces and gestures as they say the word to their neighbor. Laughter and giggles can be heard ringing from my classroom. What better way to learn than by making something fun!
