Response Cards
Perhaps you've been confronted with this situation:
After spending several days teaching a particularly difficult concept, you decide to ask the class some review questions to determine who understands the material. After each question, the same hands are always raised. You try to involve all the students in your room, but some are unwilling or unable to answer your questions. What are you to do?
Response Cards may be the solution to your problem!
How to make them:
- Cut strips of oaktag, light-weight cardboard, or index cards to measure approx. 1" by 5." You will need three strips for each student in your class.
- On one-third of the strips, place a colored circular sticker.
- On another one-third, place a different colored circular sticker.
- On the remaining one-third, write question marks.
- Using a paper punch, punch a hole at the end opposite the sticker or question mark.
- Select one of each type of strip and lay them on top of each other.
- Attach the three strips together with a metal brad.
- Make enough sets for each student in your class.
How to use them:
- Give each student a set of cards.
- Ask the class a question (YES/NO style) pertaining to material you have recently covered.
- Each student will respond with an answer:
- YES= one of the colored stickers
- NO= the other color of sticker
- I DON'T KNOW= question mark
- At a glance, you can determine who has comprehended the lesson concepts and who might need remedial help. In addition, everyone gets the opportunity to participate.
